Implants Q & A

What is a birth control implant?

A birth control implant is small and flexible and is placed under your skin on the inside of your upper arm. The implant can be taken out at any time should you wish to become pregnant. If, after three years, you decide to continue with this method, your provider at The Healthy Woman will insert a new implant. Otherwise, you can become pregnant almost right away once it’s removed.

The implant releases a steady, low dose of hormone into your blood, which prevents pregnancy in the following ways:

  • Stopping your ovaries from releasing eggs
  • Thickening the mucus in your cervix, which may keep sperm from reaching the egg
  • Changing the lining of your uterus

Does a birth control implant work for all women?

No. A birth control implant may not be right for you if:

  • You are already pregnant
  • You have blood clot issues
  • You have liver disease
  • You have, or had, breast cancer
  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding

Are there any risks or side effects?

There are possible side effects from both the hormone therapy and the insertion and removal of the implant itself. The most commonly reported side effects include:

  • Longer, shorter, or no bleeding during menstrual cycles
  • Spotting between periods
  • Irregular periods
  • Mood swings
  • Headache
